TRANSPORTATION OF CARRY-ON ITEMS

Necessary precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of passengers when items are carried on the bus. In order to insure consistency throughout the Division regarding the transportation of musical instruments and other articles, the following guidelines will apply.

Musical Instruments

Musical instruments will be allowed on the school buses providing they meet with the following criteria:

  1. They are properly enclosed in a case designated for their carriage or storage.
  2.

  3. They are compact enough to be controlled by the student on his/her knee, and do not protrude into the aisle-way at any time, and do not hamper the comfort of other passengers sharing the same seat.
  4.

  5. Students with instruments and school books must be prepared to store the books beneath the seat and should be alert to the need to place these in a plastic bag or some other protective covering during inclement weather.
  6.

  7. Students who regularly carry musical instruments to and from school can expect to be assigned seating near the front of the bus to facilitate loading and unloading.
  8.

  9. Students who do not comply with the above regulations will not be allowed to bring musical instruments on their buses.
  10.

  11. In addition to the limitations implemented by the above regulations in relation to the size of the instrument allowed, the following will not be allowed on the bus at any time:
bulletPercussion (timpani-drums)
bulletTubas
bulletEuponiums
bulletStands
bulletPodiums

Other Articles

With reference to other articles that may be required for extra-curricular activities or field trips, the following guidelines will apply:

  1. Skates will be allowed providing they are enclosed in a gym bag or similar container and are kept in the possession of the owner at all times.
  2.

  3. Curling brooms, skis, poles, snow shoes, hockey sticks, sleighs, toboggans, as well as other sports equipment such as high jump stands, javelins, etc. must be transported in a separate vehicle.
  4.

  5. Any student wishing to bring objects or articles not covered by this policy onto the bus on an occasional or one-time basis (i.e. show and tell, science projects, etc.) should check with his/her Bus Driver prior to the time. The decision as to whether or not these articles will be allowed on the bus will be left to the Bus Driver’s discretion.

Any problems encountered by the Bus Drivers regarding the enforcement and/or implementation of this program will be brought to the attention of the Supervisor of Operations for resolution.
