FILE: ACC CRISIS RESPONSE The Board of Trustees of the Portage la Prairie School Division No. 24 recognize the need to provide for both the physical and emotional safety needed by students, staff and parents in the event of a crisis. A crisis is typically a sudden, powerful event that is outside the range of usual human experience. Crisis events have the potential to impact a school, more than one school or the entire school division. Examples of such crises include, but are not limited to, unexpected accidental deaths and injuries; crimes of violence; and natural and man-made disasters. The stressful impact of such crises is often strong enough to overwhelm the usually effective coping skills of either an individual or a group. The reactions to a crisis, while more than simple stress, are not signs of mental illness. They are normal reactions by normal people to an abnormal event. It is the intent of the Board that the school division shall have a Division Crisis Response Plan and School Crisis Plans in place to enact quick and effective responses in order to minimize the disastrous effects such crises can bring. It is also the intent of the Board that follow-up personal supports will be available to assist students, staff and parents with the long-term effects such crises often bring.
