From the gym…

Happy New Year everyone!
Our grade 6-8 curlers and our grade 7 & 8 basketball players are in full swing!
Thank you to Mr. Dewis and Miss J. Wilson for assisting with curling and to Mr. Nelissen, Mr. Syrota for coaching the boys’ basketball team and to Ms. Ethans and Ms. Brown for coaching the girls’ basketball team.
As always students are encouraged to get involved as much as they can with intramural opportunities and our athletics programs. Taking part in these activities demonstrates responsibility, determination and commitment and it is a great way to be part of our school community while having fun and working hard.
In Phys. Ed. all of our classes are playing low organized games with a focus on fitness, fundamental movement skills and team work. Fitness circuits and assessments will follow in the next couple of weeks. We will then move on to throwing and catching skills.

Keeping active in the winter is a great way for families to spend time together just be sure to bundle up and get ready to enjoy some fresh air! Here are some ideas for you to consider 😊
 Go for a walk.
 Shovel snow together so it takes less time for yourselves or perhaps spread some kindness and do it for someone else.
 Skating: we have lots of free skating opportunities at BDO and Stride Place along with our outdoor community rinks (3rd NW, McKay Ave, Crescent Lake and Koko Platz).
 Sledding: on snow hills or at Garbage Hill.
 Snow shoeing and cross-country skiing on the island at the Portage Golf Course.
 Build a snow fort.
 Play man tracker.
 Have a bonfire and roast hotdogs and marshmallows with some hot chocolate.
 Build a snow person, create a snow angel or a snow sculpture.

Reminder:

Grade 2-8 students are expected to change for phys. ed. class and have clean running shoes. Please remind your child to bring back their PE clothes and to change their indoor shoes before heading outside so that we can keep our gym floors as clean as possible.
