Conflict Managers understand that:

Conflict managers help others solve conflict by allowing them to think of their own solutions.

Responsibilities of a Conflict Manager:

bullet

Are not judges or police officers

bullet

let disputes make the choice about solving disputes

bullet

don't give advice or solutions when mediating

bullet

are goof listeners

bullet

don't gossip

bullet

don't get involved when disputants are physically fighting

bullet

report on time for duty

bullet

complete class work missed during training and meetings times

bullet

agree to stay in the program until the end of the year

bullet

are positive roll models in the school

bullet

don't use physical or verbal violence to solve their own conflicts

bullet

treat others respectfully

Active Listening:

bullet

try to understand what the person is experiencing

bullet

don't judge or criticize what the person is saying

bullet

restate the main points of what the person is saying and feeling

bullet

don't interrupt or give solutions

bullet

show you care

bullet

-by having a friendly and interesting look at your face

bullet

-by facing the person squarely with hands and feet still

bullet

-by nodding your head occasionally and using friendly gestures

bullet

-by making eye contact

bullet

-by using a calm, friendly tone of voice

bullet
