I Love to Read

  • The Manitoba Reading Association has made a booklet available for all of their members to assist them in their activities for I Love to Read Month.  These booklets will be distributed at a later date.  The information is also available online:  www.readingmanitoba.org

 

  • To kick off  I Love to Read Month, PARC presents a book to the first baby born in February enrolled in the Portage Collegiate Institute Day Care Program.

 

  • Each school / association celebrates I Love to Read in different ways.  

 

  • PARC made a list of activities that we have seen at I Love to Read Celebrations:
    • Progressive Stories
    • Mystery Readers (over the school pa system)
    • "Catch them Reading" - Kids are given a ticket to enter a draw
    • 100 Day Story - One word per square on a grid paper
    • Book Modeling and Shape Books
    • Interactive Story
    • Rock 'n' Read - children sit in a Rocking chair outside the library and read a book of their choice for a set amount of time
    • Read with Style - dress up in fancy clothes
    • Caterpillar Book - Book titles a child has read are printed on a circle and then all circles are attached by a string
    • Samples of Home Reading
    • "Character Parties" - photos are taken and displayed
    • Bookmarks
    • Book Covers and Posters
    • Book report in a bag
    • Joke Books
    •  Book Club during the week - Student's work is laminated, bound and placed in library
    • Trade-A-Book
    • Wear a "readable" shirt
    • Swap-a-teacher for reading to classrooms
    • Community Readers
    • Assemblies
    • Reading Passports - Students earn a page in a passport for each book read.  For each page students complete a short review and then they are given a draw entry for each page.  Each entry must be from a different country.

I Love to Read 2008

Most schools will be celebrating I love to read during the month of February.  All projects will be on display at the schools during Education Week in April.


 

Past I Love to Read Events

Portage Area Reading Council joined  forces with the Portage la Prairie City Library to culminate the I Love to Read Month.  On Saturday, February 28th 2004.  PARC Members  set up at the Library with projects, posters and completed activities on display.  Everyone was invited to attend.  There were lovely displays of student works, book draws and much, much more.
