PCI Parent Advisory Council

Monday, February 25, 2008

 

In attendance; Kinelm Brookes, Sandi Knight, Joyce Giesbrecht, Rebekah Rud, Carol Fast, Jim Pehura, Mark Diboll, Beth Connery, Kim Sissons, and Bev Stanger.

Regrets; Sheri Morgan, Diane Hamilton, and Holly Brookes.

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by Kinelm Brookes.

 

The meeting agenda was presented and there were no additions.

 

The minutes of January 21, 2008 were read. There were no errors or omissions. Sandi Knight adopted the minutes as read and Beth Connery seconded. All in favor. Carried.

Correspondence:  There was some fundraising material which Kinelm just passed on to Jim to pass onto staff.

Treasurer's report;  No change ($311.87)

Program Report;  There is no report at this time.

Volunteer Report: The February dance was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. There is a dance coming up on Thursday, March 13. 8 - 10 volunteers will be needed; the dance is from 7:30 - 1 0:30.Kinelm will email Sheri and Diane with this information.

 

Safety Report;  There is no report at this time.

Teacher Liaison; Welcome to Mrs. Carol Fast as the new liaison. The staff thanks the Parent Council and parents for the goodies that were supplied during Staff Appreciation week.

 

Administration Report; Parking along Dufferin Ave. and 3rd St. is becoming a problem. There is some congestion and people parking where they aren't suppose to, this is seen mostly in the morning while waiting for buses and at drop off time in the afternoon. Administration has suggested to the area residences that they petition the City for no parking along these streets.

The School Division has been working with the RHA for a teen clinic to be held within the PCI campus. Discussion was held in regards to this topic.

The new Phys. Ed. curriculum for the upcoming new school year has reGeived funding for 1 staffing position. Time tabling has been worked on. The curriculum will be 50% class time with 50% tracked Physical activity (approximately 55 hours through out the school year).The Department of Education has a list set out of acceptable activities that students will be able to use towards this credit (moderate to vigorous activity to get the heart rate up).

The School Division budget meeting is being held on Tuesday 26 February in the muti-purpose room at PCl in the PCS building. The Administration will be asking for Educational Assistant support for the Student Directed Learning students as the number of students taking these courses is quite high.

On March 17, 2008 Mr. Peter Bjornson will be visiting the school and looking at the History of Rock and Roll course. Parent Council could give him a letter in regards to the new Phys. Ed curriculum.

Sandi motioned that the letter in regards to the new Phys. Ed. curriculum, approved for the School Board at the last meeting, be readdressed to Mr. Peter Bjornson and presented to him while he is visiting PCr. Joyce seconded the motion. All in favor. Carried.

 

The Math curriculum is in the works for being changed. The new curriculum is expected out maybe sometime in April.

There were 15 students in grade 12 Pre Cal that received over 90% (50 students took) in the Provincial Exam. Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Provincials are being played here March 7&8. The school will be putting in to host the Provincial Golf and Baseball this year.

Student Council; given by Mr. Jim Pehura. There is a school dance on March 13. The week of March 17 ~ 20 they are having a celebration of Arts different cultures. There will be a Lit. on Thursday, March 20 in the afternoon.

 

Old Business;  There is no old business at this time.

 

New Business; The budget meeting is Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 7:30pm in the multi-purpose room located in the PCS building of PCI.
