PCI Parent Advisory Council Meeting

In Attendance; Kinelm Brookes, Jeff Utioh, Sandi Knight, Tracey Taylor, Holly Brookes, Rolande Williams, Marilyn Gagnon, Diane Hamilton, Jim Pehura, and Bev Stanger.

Regrets; Mark Diboll, Sherri Morgan, and Beth Connery.

 

Beth is attending a School Division meeting in regards to what is wanted in a new superintendent (Larry Taylor is retiring in January).

 

A presentation was given by Stephanie Verhoeven, from Public Health and Diane Gudmundsan, a Nurse Practitioner, on the Teen Clinic that is being set up within the school. The Nurse Practitioner will be available to the students 2 days per week. Opening day is scheduled for November 12, 2008. Discussion was held on the roll of the Nurse Practitioner and questions Parent Council had were answered. The Teen Clinic can be reached by phoning the school, extension number is 1609.

A Nurse Practitioner can – prescribe

                                       - diagnose

                                       - perform minor operations

                                       - will provide support for students in helping them make responsible decisions

                                       - provide referrals to other professional medical services (eg. AFM, Mental Health)

Open House for the Teen Clinic will be in January, tours will be offered at Parent/Teacher interviews, November 13 and November 14, 2008.

Meeting was called to order at 7:55 pm. by Kinelm.

 

Agenda was presented and there were no additions.  Rolande Williams adopted the agenda as presented and Diane Hamilton second. All in favor. Carried.

 

The minutes of September 15, 2008 were read. There were no errors or omissions. Tracey Taylor adopted the minutes as read and Rolande second. All in favor. Carried.

 

The new Parent Council members as elected at the AGM earlier are;

                        Co-Chair (2nd year) – Beth Connery

                        Co-Chair (1st year) – Sandi Knight

                        Secretary – Bev Stanger (interim)

                        Treasurer – Tracey Taylor

                        Program – Administration will look after this year

Volunteer Committee – Diane Hamilton and Holly Brookes (Sherri Morgan will be asked if   

                                       she still would like to be on the committee.)

There was no correspondence to address.

 

Treasurer’s Report; The balances are $281.01 and $589.00.

 

Volunteer Report; The surveys went out with the first newsletter and there have only been 8 surveys returned.

 

Safety Coordinator Report; The mold problem has been addressed and cleaned up.

 

Teacher Representative Report; Jim Pehura reported that the yearbook will be distributed a little later than last year. Students should be receiving them on Monday, October 27, 2008. The yearbook cost is part of the student fee which is requested at the beginning of each year from each student.

 

Administration Report; There are 1070 students enrolled this year which met with their projections.

With Ms. Barbara Kehrstephan’s retirement at the end of January her responsibilities are being reassigned to other administration staff as her position is not being filled.

There will be a dance held on October 30 and student council will look after getting chaperones for it.

November 7 will be the Remembrance Day service at the school. On November 10 students will have the chance to sign up for post secondary days, which offers them the chance to check out different post secondary schools.

The school teams are doing well this year so far. The boys soccer team came home with consolation from Provincials. The football team is undefeated so far. The hockey teams have almost completed their rosters for the upcoming year.

 

Old Business; There is no old business at this time.

 

New Business; The Phys. Ed. program will have a comment on the report card as it is a pass/fail mark at he end. Reviews  have been positive so far. There has been more intermural participation and there are more students using the fitness/weight room.

Not all teachers are using the homework page that can be accessed through the internet on the school’s web site. It is a new program and not all teachers have had time to get comfortable with it.

The school has received a smart board, which is a video recording of a class. It is being piloted in the Physics classes and there have been some glitches to work out. In the second semester Pre-Cal 40S will be added. Students will be able to access these through the school’s website.
