Greetings from the MHSAA

Welcome!

On behalf of the MHSAA and member schools, welcome to the 2010 Provincial High School Golf Championships.  The golf season comes to a conclusion for over 1,100 student athletes, from across Manitoba.  Congratulations for achieving your goal of advancing to the Provincials.

We would like to extend a special thanks to our major partner, Golf Manitoba.  They have been enthusiastic supporters of high school golf from day one, and we appreciate their cooperation.  Thanks are also extended Al Patterson of Portage Collegiate and all of the volunteers for convening this championship as well as the Portage Golf & Country Club for hosting the provincials.

This has been a special year for Golf in Manitoba with the CN LPGA Canadian Open event recently held in Winnipeg.  The top female golfers from around the world were in attendance displaying their skills.  It was great to be able to see these young ladies in action.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our major corporate partners, Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, Manitoba’s Credit Unions, Boston Pizza, Subway, MTS, Wilson Sports, Awards & More and Sport Manitoba.

We hope that everyone has a great day, a great round, makes new friends, and achieves their personal best.

Congratulations and best of luck.

Morris Glimcher

Executive Director

Greetings from Golf Manitoba

On behalf of Golf Manitoba, I extend a warm welcome and best wishes to all competitors in the 20th Annual Manitoba High School Golf Championship.

The volunteers and staff of Golf Manitoba are pleased to work with the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, once again, to conduct this event.  Our role is to ensure the tournament is played under the same rules and conditions as all of the other provincial golf championships and to ensure all participants enjoy the competitive experience.  Our on course rules officials are there to help if you encounter any problems or uncertainty during your game.  Please do not hesitate to call on them for assistance.

The Portage Golf Club will be an excellent site for this year’s tournament.  It is one of Manitoba’s better competitive golf courses.

Play well, and have fun!

Harvey Goehring

President

Welcome to PCI

Gregg Waldvogel – Principal

On behalf of the students and staff at PCI, I would like to welcome the athletes, coaches, and fans to the 2010 MHSAA Provincial Golf Championships. We are looking forward to a couple great days of golf.

I would like to thank the staff and volunteers for helping out with this event. We hope this will be a positive experience for all the athletes taking part.

Tournament Notes

This year's golf championship is Friday, September 24th, in Portage.  As a result of a motion being passed at the 2004 June AGM, teachers will be walking the course to assist with the scoring.  A meeting for the teacher supervisors will take place at 9:20am, to clarify any concerns.

All entry forms must be received by 9:00am on Tuesday, September 21st.  No late entries will be accepted and no entries over the phone.  If your zone does NOT have a girls team, please let me know by phone (925-5642) or email me at greg@mhsaa.ca

All golf entry forms are to be sent to:          Greg Jarvis   - FAX:  925-5624 or email: greg@mhsaa.ca

Each zone may enter a maximum of one girls and one boys team in each championship category.  A team consists of 4 golfers.  The alternate is only allowed to replace another golfer who cannot attend the championship and this must be approved with Greg prior to September 21st.

*An open category (to a maximum of 4 boys/girls) is open for zones that do not have a school team in their zone, in a specific gender.  (team result will not be tabulated).

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Registration begins at 8:00am and will continue until Opening Ceremonies at 9:30am.  The golfers will then disperse to their starting tee-off for a 10:00 shotgun start.  A luncheon and awards ceremony will be held right after the round, (approximately 3:00pm-5:00pm).  All participating schools must attend.

PRACTICE ROUNDS  will be available on Thursday, September 23rd.  Please call Brad Young  at 857-6177 or 1866-714-7058.  For more information about the golf course, go to www.portagegolfclub.ca

NOTE:  Each team must have four golfers participate.  Failure to do so, may result in immediate disqualification and performance bond forfeiture.  All teams attending the MHSAA Provincial Golf Championships must have a teacher from their school supervising the team.  Failure to have a teacher with the team may result in immediate disqualification and performance bond forfeiture.  Please let Greg know who the supervising teacher is.  It is also important that all golfers adhere to the dress code as explained on page 22 of the Provincial Handbook.  (Other rules are in the handbook on pages 20-22).

SUPPLEMENTARY LOCAL RULES

Play is governed by the Rules of Golf as approved for use in Canada by the Royal Canadian Golf  Association (2004), and by the Standard Local Rules of Golf Manitoba (2007), supplemented by the following Local Rules (Competitors are instructed to ignore any Local Rules printed on the Host Club score card).

1.      All female competitors must use the RED tees.

2.      All male competitors must use the WHITE tees.

3.      Distance Measuring Devices – a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. However, if, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance measuring device , that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his/her play (e.g. gradient, wind-speed, temperature, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3 , for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional functions are actually used.

4.      Ground under repair – indicated by white paint circling the area.

5.      Drop areas are located behind holes #11 and #18 greens if ball is played past the green.

6.      Shelters are located at Holes #4 and #5 tees.

7.      The ball must be played as it lies throughout the entire golf course.

8.      There is a practice putting and chipping green with driving nets provided.

If in doubt as to procedure call for an official or play a second ball per rule 3-3.

A player electing to play a second ball must:

1.      Announce his/her intention to his/her marker

2.      Declare which ball he/she wishes to count if the Rules permit

3.      Report the facts of the situation to the Committee before returning his/her scorecard. Failure to report to the Committee results in disqualification.
