Portage Collegiate Institute is the oldest operating
collegiate in the province, established in 1883. The 1904 building was
destroyed by fire in 1954, leaving an historical void.
The PCI Archive was created as a result of
discussions with the Millennium Committee of 2000. The Committee felt
that PCI needed to preserve the history of the school for future
generations. The Archive started in 2001. Following meetings
with representatives of the Manitoba Association of Archives, a group of
students were instructed in basic archive management. These students
drew up policies and procedures to establish the PCI Archive.
The PCI Archive was created to “house and preserve
materials related to the history of Portage Collegiate Institute”. The
Archive accepts donations of artifacts, documents and photographs. All
donated items go through a conservation procedure and accessioning.
Item descriptions are entered on a database. All donations are placed
in the school archive for permanent safe keeping, available for generations
to come.
In addition to handling material items, the Archive has
expanded to include an oral history project, a web page and a video library;
all related to PCI and its former students.
The Archive is open to the public by prior arrangement
only. Appointments may be made by calling the school’s general office
at 857-6843.
PCI Archive Mission Statement:
"Preserving the
collective memory of Portage Collegiate Institute."
