Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is very important to the successful completion of courses at P.C.I.  The Portage Collegiate Institute Conduct Code for the Senior High School is intended to apply to concerns in the area of attendance, habitual lates and truancy as well.  Teacher action i.e. communication with students and parents as needed, followed be a referral to school administration if required, is part of the process.  The following process will be followed in the management of the classroom attendance:

    1. Attendance will be taken every class and the names of students absent will be reported to the office for recording at the end of the day.

    2. Students will be required to explain to their teacher the reason for any absence.  In this case of missing a test, a note signed by a parent, acknowledging that a test was missed and a reason given for missing it must be presented to the teacher by the student when he/she returns to school.  Failure to do this will result in the student's not being allowed to write the test and a mark of 0% will be given.

Teachers will monitor attendance of their students in the following way:

a) teachers will phone parents to check on absenteeism

b) obvious attendance or truancy concerns will be referred to the office (Conduct Code)

All office referrals will be preceded by teacher guided interventions.
