Building Construction & Trades
Carpentry and Industrial Arts Woodwork are different entities. Carpentry Manitoba Technical Vocational Framework of Outcomes has been developed to prepare high school students for a career in one specific trade. At PCI, students can learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to work as carpenters.
However, we welcome all who wish to study and develop skills related to ALL Building Trades such as:

Introduction to Carpentry (CAI10S) - Course Fee $25
This optional course allows students to explore carpentry. In this course, students will gain an understanding of woods, wood products, and processes. Students will use a variety of measurement and layout tools to create wood projects. Students will also study structures, environmental impact of structures, and how they have changed our world.
Carpentry Fundamentals (CAF20S) - Course Fee $25
This course gives students a broad introductory overview to the carpentry cluster. Students will develop the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes related to carpentry. Curriculum content focuses on an introduction to the building process. The emphasis will be on project-based activities. To complete this course, students will demonstrate an understanding of current innovation in woodwork processes, applications, and emerging new technologies.
Carpentry Tools and Equipment (CTE30S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will learn about hand, power, pneumatic, stationary, measuring, layout tools and equipment, and their applications, maintenance and procedures for use. It includes many of the objectives found in Level 1 Unit A3 Tools and Equipment from Apprenticeship Manitoba.
Framing (FRM30S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will learn basic framing techniques. Students will build large scale projects such as sheds. The course includes many of the objectives found in Level 1 Unit A6 Wood and Wood Products from Apprenticeship Manitoba.
Exterior/Interior Finishing (EIF30S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will learn basic installation techniques for interior and/or exterior finishes such as baseboard, crown molding, siding and exterior flashings. It includes many of the objectives found in Level 1 Unit A7 Non-wood Products from Apprenticeship Manitoba.
Surveying and Concrete (SUR40S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will demonstrate knowledge of site layout tools, equipment and processes. They will also demonstrate knowledge of concrete and concrete products, footings, slab-on-grade, grade beam forms and wall forms. This course includes all of the objectives found in A4 Site Layout 1, C1 Concrete and Concrete Products, C2 Footings, Slab-on-Grade and Grade Beam Forms, and C3 Wall Forms from Level 1 Apprenticeship Manitoba.
Advanced Framing (ADF40S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will continue what they learned in Grade 11 Framing expanding the level of skill required. Students will learn gable, hip, gull-wing, unequal pitch roofing, and floor framing techniques. The course includes all of the objectives found in B3 Temporary Access Equipment and Structures from Level 1 Apprenticeship Manitoba.
Carpentry Millwork (AML40S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will be introduced to the knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the manufacturing and installation of millwork (trim and built in cabinets) and advanced skills such as coping and scribing moldings.
Applied Carpentry (ACP40S) - Course Fee $25
In this course, students will synthesize knowledge, skills and attitudes learned in previous courses to complete projects. Students in this course will be designing and building a project of their own. They will also prepare for Level 1 accreditation with Apprenticeship Manitoba, and demonstrate knowledge of the Trade Safety Awareness Curriculum for Level 1 Apprentices. The course also includes all of the objectives found in A1 Orientation I: Structure and Scope of Carpenter, A2 Trade Safety Awareness from Level 1 Apprenticeship Manitoba.
